Updated – June 8, 2021
The SFNE Buy American Fabricated Campaign is making progress. With the help of Delaney & Associates, our new lobbyists, SFNE recently filed Buy American Amendments to the Massachusetts House and Senate Budgets.
The amendments address the procurement language in Chapter 30B, the Massachusetts statute that requires local authorities to award projects to the lowest bidder. While the House and Senate amendments were withdrawn, the efforts have generated a lot of discussion and support for our efforts to reduce the number of public steel fabrication jobs going to foreign competition.
As the amendments have been filed, SFNE has reached out to members to request that they contact their legislators to request support for the legislation. To succeed, legislators must hear from their constituents about the bill’s importance to the steel fabrication industry.
SFNE also submitted testimony in favor of Maine Buy American Legislation, noting that the industry wants preference for all New England fabricators.
Delaney & Associates is scheduling meetings between SFNE members and House and Senate Leadership as well as the Governor’s office. These meetings will provide an opportunity for SFNE members to explain first-hand the challenges that foreign steel fabricators pose to the Massachusetts and New England fabricated steel industry.
Over the summer months the Task Force together with the Delaney & Associates will work on behalf of the SFNE membership to achieve a solution that will give preference to the domestic steel fabrication industry public construction.
